The Hart’s Shoes Story
William Lloyd Hart left his log cabin in Bath County Kentucky at age 16. His destination was Indianapolis, Indiana and his search was for a job that might offer more than farm life in the Kentucky hills. Once he arrived, he found employment with Marrot Shoe Store on Washington Street. From there, he took a position with Stout’s, and then with the New York Department Store.
While there, he became acquainted the Crowder-Cooper wholesale shoe firm. They helped him start his own store in Anderson, Indiana, while also travelling with their line of shoes. By now he was married, and he packed the family up and moved to Anderson. The In October of 1912, the first Hart Shoe Store was opened at 815 S Meridian in the downtown area. Hart Shoe’s expanded over the next 20 years, expanding to Huntington, Elwood, Kokomo, and Wabash as well as other locations. The depression was a difficult time for everyone, and Hart Shoes was no exception, eventually forcing them to operate out of the family home for a brief period.
In 1937, W.L. Hart moved his family once again, this time to Winona Lake, Indiana and opened a store in Warsaw. In 1968, his son James F. Hart opened Hart’s Shoe Village at 511 N Washington in Kokomo. In 1971, James’ son Michael J. Hart returned from Vietnam and joined his father in the business, managing their Marion store at 1001 S Baldwin Avenue. In the following years, they opened stores in Wabash, Indiana, Lafayette Indiana, and Tamarac, Florida. And then in 1987 Hart Shoes moved to their current location at 1501 N. Baldwin in Marion, where Michael and Patty continue the family tradition.
